Production Plan...

Production Plan

Last lesson we decided a tick list was needed, as each member has an assigned role some tasks can be done individually. Before we start filming we need to organise ourselves and need to check if we can use certain things for example instruments and locations, below are bullet points which are useful for our production plan;

  • Permission to use instruments: This plan can be ticked off due to myself and Charlotte going to the music department in school, luckily they have agreed to us using the instruments as long as we fill out a Health and Safety sheet. This is not a problem for our group. So we can definitely use instruments provided from the music department in the school.
  • Location Checks: We have spoke about location many times, we just need to go to our chosen locations and take pictures to put on the blog. We have two locations we want to film at, for the performance it will be at school and Greenwich.
  • Plan Outfits: This bullet point is we need to sort out our costume ideas, what myself, Megan and Charlotte will be wearing. Pictures are to be uploaded of our costume choices. The planning of the outfits are important because we want them to fit with the genre of the song.
  • Props: Our group have decided that we will be needing props for our music video, some of these we will have to design and create ourselves. If you look back at the storyboards you will see we will be needing posters and t-shirts. These are the props that we will be creating ourselves within in the group.
  • Filming Dates: Within in the group we need to organise ourselves for dates that we are all available and free to be able to film. For the performance we are filming at school, we have all agreed on one day after school for this part of our video.
  • Experiment with Instagram: During the process of our storyboards we discussed as well as agreed that will be experiment with the photo app 'Instagram'. This is because we all have access to the app and we want to use this app at the beginning of our music video.
  • Arrange Make-Up: Make up is similar to our costume ideas, we will take pictures of ideas we were thinking of how we want our make up to look and upload them onto the blog.
  • Photo shoot for Digi-Pack: We need pictures to be able to produce a digi-pack for our band Dragonfly. Myself, Megan and Charlotte will be starring in the photo shoot as we are the band. Tolga will be the photographer and Director.

Animatic

Here is the animatic finished and for people to see what we have came up with for our music video. Completing the animatic was a long process but i can say we have achieved it successfully, those who will look on either mine or other members of the group (Megan, Charlotte and Tolga) will see that our animatic fits well with the music and knows what each shot goes with what part of the music.

The reason why we have created an animatic is it creates a clearer vision of what our video will look like rather than looking at the storyboard sheets without the music.

Storyboards...

STORYBOARDS.

Here are the completed storyboards that our group have produced. Over all we have 95 storyboard shots, this is one of the reasons why it has took so long to complete as a group we have had many things to discuss and as you can see there are a lot of shots which have been carefully thought about so we know what happens in each shot to when we come to start filming our music video.

A positive outlook from creating our shots is we thought about timing for each one and added how many seconds each one will be.  Also we added colour which i think gives you a feel of what we want our video to look like, something from colouring the shots is it won't be a dahl video it will be colourful. We have produced storyboards that are clear and concised that are easy to follow not only for us but for other people to see if they wanted to know what our music video will be about.

Feedback.

Feedback for our Pitch...

These are the feedback sheets from our pitch, thankfully we got given good feedback which we can take and work on it to improve.

Our postive comments were;

- We produced good information on our record label (RoughTrade),

- Thought about our locations well, we want Greenwich to be our main location to film. For our performance we will be filming at school, as we have the facilities such as; drum kit, bass and guitar,

- A clear idea of what we want to do. (Storyboards will be added to the blog as well as animatic here you will be to see what we have came up with and what we hope to achieve as a group for our music video),

- The idea of how we want to look as a band,

- Lastly we gave good detailed information of our backstory of our band to show how we got to where we are today.

Comments to improve;

- Where we want to film in Greenwich this could be a little tricky as we may have to ask for permission to film certain places there, also travel and health and safety,

- Our narrative needs a little more improvement.

Overall i think our feedback is positive but i know a couple of changes are needed which are in progress and will be on the blog soon.

Journal/Storyboards/Animatic

I think myself and the group can all say it has been a struggle doing the storyboards and trying to get our ideas onto paper.  We have finally finished our storyboards, with colour and now putting them into an animatic. From doing this task of the process of our music video, i think we can all take something from it and realise what we would do differently for next time. Where we have spent a lot of time creating the frames as well as taking our time so the seconds fit with the song, and had something for each shot. As we have started to create the animatic and it slowly seeing a vision of what our music video could look like realistically, we have noticed a couple of things that we didn't actually need in the first place for example we have deleted shot number seven from the animatic due to it being irrelevant to our music video.

Creating the storyboards has been stressful and time consuming for the whole group, due to wanting to produce something successful and making a music video that will work for us and fits with the song we chose Republica-Ready To Go. Even though creating our music video is a good way to promote our band DragonFly we have came up with ways that promoting is used today. We have ideas where fans will be chasing us, reading a newspaper and will be us on the front of it etc.

Charlotte has been assigned with the role of leader/director as she will tell us what to do and keep having us with something to do which is a good thing as we want our music video to be successful. Tolga will the camera man for our video as well as lighting so really he will mostly be based with the production side of things, roles that still need to be assigned are props/locations and make-up/costume this is to be decided between myself and Megan but we could work between these roles between ourselves.

The animatic is currently being made and will uploaded onto the blog when it is completed along with feedback.

Ideas...

In the double lesson before we broke up for the half term many things were discussed towards our music video. Also myself, Megan and Charlotte have an added group member Tolga he is now part of our group which we are all very pleased with due to his skilled camera work, and his useful ideas.

We printed out the lyrics of the song 'Ready To Go' and stuck them on a big piece of paper where we could write around them, we wanted to do this so we can look at each verse and have a vision as a group how we want the video to look for that part of the song.

Here are the song lyrics...

You're weird, in tears, too near and too far away,
He said, saw red, went home stayed in bed all day,
Your t'shirt, dish dirt,
Always love the one you hurt

It's a crack, I'm back yeah standing
On the rooftops shouting out,
Baby I'm ready to go
I'm back and ready to go
From the rooftops shout it out
It's a crack, I'm back yeah standing
On the rooftops having it
Baby I'm ready to go
I'm back and ready to go

From the rooftops shout it out, shout it out

You sleep, too deep, one week is another world
Big mouth, big mouth, drop out, drop out
You get what you deserve
You're stange, insane, one thing you can never change

It's a crack, I'm back yeah standing
On the rooftops shouting out,
Baby I'm ready to go
I'm back and ready to go
From the rooftops shout it out
It's a crack, I'm back yeah standing
On the rooftops having it
Baby I'm ready to go
I'm back and ready to go
From the rooftops shout it out, shout it out

Abused, confused, always love the one that
hurt ya hurt ya hurt ya

It's a crack, baby I'm ready to go
Baby I'm ready to go...

As i mentioned above myself and the group discussed ideas for our music video as well as locations and realistically thinking what we would be able to get our hands to film the video.

- The song has an intro which starts of soft then the electric guitar kicks in, we thought for this part of the song we could introduce ourselves as a band by us Dragonfly walking in slow motion. A location we are very confident in using in our music video is Greenwich, this has different areas which would suit nicely with the kind of music video we want to create.

- Throughout the video we had an idea of including clips of places in Greenwich such as the vintage shops, cafes, restauranst, park etc.

- We may add pictures to show 'behind the scene images'. We was thinking of using a picture editing tool, either instagram and cinegram.

-In the lesson as well as thinking of ideas we experimented with lighting which we could use to shoot in, whether we should keep it in normal lighting or mess around with the effects.

- Before videoing you need storyboards, but you need an idea first to draw the storyboards. A shot for the music video another idea we had was people would be chasing us (the band) whether it is paparazzi or groupies? Not yet decided. To hide from those who would be chasing us we would run into a vintage shop, preferably in Greenwich.

- Based from a line from the song 'on the rooftop shouting out' we want to aim to have a shot of us performing on a rooftop and this shot will be shown everytime these lyrics come up. Also being part of our performing shot which we want to include, based on it being filmed on a rooftop. There has been big discussion about  health and safety issues that would be  involved, we had an idea on doing it on the school roof but we need to ask someone high up in the school if this is okay.

- When filming a music video you have to think realistic about what you hope to achieve in your music video and what you can get your hands on to do this the way you planned it. An example of this being to get a drum kit on a rooftop or generally getting a drum kit for the music video. So yet again we had discussed to use a normal drum kit or an electric? Because we were basing it on vintage, retro is another idea we could use instead of vintage. As well an electric drum kit would add an 80s vibe and would make our music video retro/80s.

-Another performing idea was using my garden which would come across us documentry style footage of us recording the song in my garden. This is another one to think about.

As you can see we have thought about many things that we want to include in our music video, it is just the matter of making it work and getting the equitment we want also location is a big thing towards us finding out whether we can film there or not. More information will be posted on the blog to take you more to understanding our idea and making the finishing product.

Logo ideas..

This blog post you will be seeing some logo ideas we have been experimenting with and ideas we are pleased that with have came up with. Above is the name of our band 'DragonFly' due to being called this we have came up with an idea of including a dragonfly in the logo. As you can see we are using it as the letter 'Y', we have chose it there as we think the shape of the dragonfly suits and looks good there. Below are a couple more pictures of dragonflys that we are experimenting with the text and whether we should just use the outline of a dragonfly.

PITCH.

Above is the pitch myself, Charlotte and Megan presented to our media class and teachers in our double lesson on Wednesday 17th, this post will let you look at our pitch and see what ideas we have came up with for our band DragonFly. We got filmed presenting our pitches, the video below is us doing that. We got feedback from our pitches which will be put on the blog. Me, Megan and Charlotte have discussed things from the feedback and came to realise some of our ideas weren't realstic based on location ideas. We re-listened to the song and came up with more ideas that we are pleased with and will hopefully start story boarding them.

Our song...Republica-Ready To Go.

Above is the music video of the song we have chosen which is Republica-Ready To Go, the genre of music is pop rock. We want our music video to look different, different that no one has done before. Towards Fragonfly being an all girl band we didn't want to be a typical girl group, we want to be a confident, soft rock girl band.

Bands To Look At!

Bands to Look At...

Paramore

Paramore are a four piece band with Hayley Williams as the lead singer, the reason me, Megan and Charlotte chose to look at this band is because of them having a female lead singer as we are an all girl band. Also because of her presence on stage as well as style, she is confident and out there which we want to take from to pur towards our video.

Warpaint

Another band that we have been looking at is Warpaint, the type of music they do is indie/soft rock. They are an all girl band which is another reason why we decided to look into them due to us being an all girl band we want to see what we can do differently to them to make us a new, fresh band (Dragonfly). Below is a link of one there songs 'Undertow', the to listen to it you need to click on the link names 'Warpaint-Unfertow'.

Journal.

In today's lesson myself, Charlotte and Megan were adding more to our pitch which we are doing in powerpoint presentation. We will be presenting the pitch next double lesson on Wednesday 16/10/12, which after we have pitched will put on our blogs.

Mood Board...

The purpose of mine,Megan and Charlottes mood board is to give you a rough idea of what our music video will be like. What will be in it? Where the location is? Also what kind of look we want for our band Dragonfly. In this post i will include the mood board we made, which you will see includes many pictures, words and lyrics of the song we are doing. Undernead where i have wrote 'Mood Board', is the link to be able see pictures of our mood board on prezi.

Response to Leanne...

My response to Leanne...i agree with everything that has been said and i don't have anything that needs to be discussed. All i know is that i need to be up to date, making sure i am doing blog posts weekly and be organised with my time and blog . I need to be more explanatory and detailed with all blog posts. I know what i need to do and its understandable that i should of done it at the time rather than later leaving myself to do it all at once. I need to SORT IT OUT!

19/9/12

In todays lesson we made our groups for A2 coursework task who is me, Megan and Charlotte. We are a pop rock band called Dragonfly, and will be doing the song 'Replubica-Ready to go'. We have thought of some ideas of what we want to include or do in our music video.

  • Powder Paint,
  • We will be a three piece band myself on the drums, and Megan and Charlotte will be doing either bass, guitar and vocals,
  • Colourful,
  • Documentry style,
  • Behind the scene shots.
  • Other band names we thought of; Tropicana, Rockstarz, Fruit Pastels, Concrete Rose, Enchanted.

14/9/12

Gerri Halliwell - It's Raining Men

The opening of the music video has an intertextual reference to the film 'Flashdance', these print screens are showing this. In the video she tends to be showing alot of flesh which could come towards as sexual, and showing of the new Gerri Halliwell meaning her new look. As well as saying 'reborn of Gerri Halliwell' from the Spice Girls breaking up.

Selling the artist:
  • Changes in costume,
  • Central framing,
  • Showing off her 'talent',
  • Selling Gerris new image.
Due to Gerri Halliwell being in the Spice Girls she has a fan base of those who were fans of them, also with the music video having intertextual references to Flashdance and Fame an audience of more older that watched Flashdance and Fame when it first come out.

Visual Lyrics

-Theres rain but its not raining men this amplifies not literally illustrative.
-Change in music,
Cutting on the beat at times.

  • Voyeuris; Fragmentation in early sequence, Geris new body image.
  • Looking; Structure of characters looking at her, echoes 'gaze of viewer'.

Cyclic model of 'pop'

1) New music emerging; youtube/band-uni bar,

2) They build a fan base,

3) Independant label signing,

4) Promotion; gigs, single, album release and constructing there band image. (Music is more important than the image),

5) Majors- Want some of the action and buy out rights,

6) Music Video
    (Brand image) Global
    Mainstreamised
  • Appeal to a mass audience
  • Becomes popular
  • Conventional
  • Genre Specific
  • Product to be manufactured.

  • To create a recognisable image that will appeal to the target audience.
  • Marketing tool for the artists/band.
  • Increase airplay of the song.
  • Create more interest in the album.
  • Sell singles, albums and the band/artists brand.
Media Theorist: Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin wrote about music videos and suggested that they follow basic, certain rules or codes and conventions.
  1. The record company's demand for exposure of the artist will mean a lot of close up shots of the singer/band.
  2. There will be a relationship between the music and visuals.
  3. There will be a relationship between the lyrics and visuals.
  4. There will be genre characteristics for example; rock music videos show live performances, hip hop videos present images of wealth and a gangsta lifestyle and boy bands have dance routines.
  5. There will be references to the nation of looking for example; television screens, mirrors, people looking at each other or at the audience etc.
  6. There will be some use of intertextual referencing.

Textual Analysis: Music Video
